Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Colombo will commence academic activities for its 2015 intake of students for MSc Courses in February 2015. MSc programmes at IBMBB include extensive laboratory training, and its graduates are in high demand with some even receiving job offers before completion of the degree programme. Some of the successful MSc students are able to obtain PhD studentships at the IBMBB. All MSc courses are full time and fee levying.

 

The Programmes
  • MSc in Molecular Life Sciences 
A three semester programme with each semester running for 20 weeks. This course will provide advance training and a strong foundation in branches of Molecular Life Sciences. First two semesters are by course work with extensive laboratory training. Third semester is a research project organized to give training in research methodology.
  • MSc in Cellular and Molecular Immunology 
A three semester programme with each semester running for 20 weeks. This course will provide advance training and a strong foundation in branches of Cellular and Molecular Immunology. First two semesters are by course work with extensive laboratory training. Third semester is a research project organized to give training in research methodology.

Apart from these Msc programs IBMBB conducts two short term courses as follows,

  • Cell Culture Techniques  – 45 hrs (5 days)

Course will be of 45 h duration and will consist of theory and practicals with hands on experience in basic cell culture techniques such as safety precautions in cell culture lab, media preparation, cell counting and viability determination, growth of adherent and suspension cells and maintenance of cells, freezing and thawing of human cancer cell lines, apoptotic detection by AO/EB staining and DNA fragmentation assay, cytotoxicity determination by MTT and SRB assays and an exposure to anti cancer drug screening. Isolation and maintenance of primary cells and DNA and RNA extraction from cultured cells also will be discussed.The course is suitable for young scientists, clinicians, academics, technical officers and postgraduate students, students awaiting higher studies in biological sciences and individuals who are interested in pursuing animal cell culture in their scientific fields. Maximum number of participants is limited to 15.
Course fee :For local participants – Rs. 50,000 /=
Course fee for applicants from other SAARC countries – 575 USD.
  • Immunological Techniques – 45 hrs (5 days)
Course is of 45 h duration and consist of theory and practicals with hands on experience in basicimmunological techniques including, Introduction to immunology, Cells of the immune system, Identification of leukocytes, Purification of human leukocytes, Isolation of rat immune cells and short term culture, Antigen-Antibody interactions and principles of immunoassays, Immunodiagnostic assays: ELISA(Immunofluorescence, Immunochromatography, Haemoagglutination),Functional assays for immune cellsCourse fee :For local participants – Rs. 30,000 /=Course fee for applicants from other SAARC countries – 350 USD.
